1. Pick the Perfect Pumpkins

Start by selecting pumpkins that are small to medium in size so they are easy for little hands to paint. You’ll want to avoid pumpkins with deep ridges or irregular shapes since smooth surfaces are easier to decorate. Mini pumpkins can also be a fun option, especially for younger children!

Pro tip: Wash and dry the pumpkins beforehand so the paint will adhere better.

2. Choose a Kid-Friendly Location

Since pumpkin painting can get a bit messy, you’ll want to select a space that’s easy to clean up. If weather permits, consider setting up the party outdoors. If indoors, lay down newspaper, plastic tablecloths, or old bedsheets to protect your surfaces.

Pro tip: If you’re indoors, consider setting up small individual stations where each child can work on their pumpkin with their own materials.

3. Prepare the Supplies

You don’t need to break the bank when it comes to supplies, but make sure you have enough for each child to fully express their creativity. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Acrylic paints: Choose a variety of colors. Acrylic paint works best on pumpkins because it sticks well and dries quickly.
  • Paintbrushes: Provide an assortment of brush sizes for different painting techniques.
  • Paint pens and markers: For detailed work, such as drawing faces or writing names.
  • Stickers, googly eyes, and glitter: To add an extra touch of fun and flair.
  • Aprons or old t-shirts: Protect the kids’ clothes from paint splatters.
  • Paper plates or paint palettes: To pour the paint onto.
  • Cups of water: For rinsing brushes between colors.
  • Paper towels or rags: For easy cleanup.

Pro tip: Use washable paint for very young children to avoid long-lasting messes.

4. Set Up a Snack Station

No pumpkin painting party for kids is complete without some delicious treats! Set up a snack table with fall-themed goodies for the kids to enjoy during or after painting. Some ideas include:

  • Pumpkin-shaped sugar cookies they can decorate with frosting
  • Apple slices with caramel dip
  • Mini pumpkin pies
  • Hot apple cider or juice boxes

Pro tip: Keep it simple with finger foods that won’t interrupt the painting too much.

5. Plan Some Party Games

While the paint is drying, entertain the kids with a few fall-themed games. Here are some ideas to get them moving and keep the fun going:

  • Pumpkin bowling: Use a small pumpkin as the “bowling ball” and set up some empty bottles or cans as pins.
  • Pumpkin relay race: Divide the kids into teams, and have them pass a small pumpkin to one another without dropping it.
  • Pin the Grin on the Pumpkin: A fall twist on “Pin the Tail on the Donkey,” using a paper pumpkin on the wall.

Pro tip: Always have a few extra activities ready in case the kids need something to do while they wait.

6. Take-Home Treats

Send each child home with their painted pumpkin as a keepsake, but consider adding a little extra goodie bag as a party favor. Some fun ideas for what to include:

  • Mini bags of candy corn or gummy pumpkins
  • Small containers of Play-Doh in fall colors
  • Fall-themed stickers
  • A thank-you note for coming to the party!

Pro tip: Label the pumpkins or take a group photo to remember the fun day!

7. Give Out Awards

Have a little fun with it by giving out awards to each child for their creative efforts! Choose themed awards like “spookiest pumpkin” or “most colorful”. Each child will be proud to bring their award and pumpkin home from your pumpkin painting party!

8. Pumpkin Painting Inspiration

I’ve gathered some of my favorite pumpkin painting ideas and inspiration for kids, along with a bit of a how-to guide each for style. For some of these, you’ll want to have a bit of drying time between steps. This is where snacks and party games will come in handy!

Thumbprint Painted Pumpkins

Thumbprint painted pumpkins are one of my favorite ways to paint pumpkins, especially for really young kids and toddlers. You’ll want to help your little one dip their thumb in a paint color of their choice and simply press it on the pumpkin. Repeat this step until they’re happy with the overall look. Then you’ll want to be sure they dry a bit before taking a sharpie or paint pen to add any extra details.

Here’s a look at a quick tutorial (Click the > on the right side to play the video):

Googly Eye Pumpkins

This is a fun and simple way to paint pumpkins, and what kid doesn’t love playing with a pack of googly eyes? First they’ll want to paint their pumpkin any base color or colors they want. Let it dry a bit and then go crazy sticking all the googly eyes on the pumpkin.

Monster Pumpkin Painting

These monster pumpkins are the cutest, and you can even show your little painters the photo so they can follow the step-by-step guide created by Aubrey Originals.

Final Thoughts

A pumpkin painting party for kids is a great way to celebrate fall and let little ones unleash their creativity. With the right planning, the party will be a hit for kids and parents alike! Just remember to keep the atmosphere light and fun, encourage kids to express themselves artistically, and don’t stress about the mess—after all, it’s all part of the creative process.

So gather your supplies, invite the neighborhood kids, and get ready for a fun-filled day of pumpkin painting! 🎃
