Planning a nursery is one of my favorite things to write about. I especially love coming up with the perfect theme for an expectant mama and her baby. One nursery theme that has been trending lately that I absolutely love is the mountain nursery theme.
The mountain nursery theme can also be described as an adventure nursery, but it can also be mixed with elements from a number of different themes as well:
- Travel Nursery
- Hot Air Balloon Nursery
- Woodlands Nursery Theme
- Forest Nursery Theme
- Outdoorsy Nursery Theme
- Camping Nursery Theme
You can mix and match your mountain theme with any of the ideas above to bring together a whimsical, dreamy space for your new baby.

Nursery Paint Colors
What color scheme works best for a mountain nursery theme? You’ll first want to choose a base wall color. This will be the main color of your walls.
For a mountain-themed nursery, you’ll want to stick with neutral colors as your base. Think greys, whites, and creams.
Next, you’ll want to bring in an accent color or two. This color will contrast with the neutral base color. You can go with darker (or lighter) neutrals or bring in colorful accents like pops of hunter green, navy blues or even shades of pink for a feminine touch.
Mountain Wall Art
The main focal point of most mountain nursery themes is an accent wall dedicated to mountain art in the form of wall decals, mountain wall murals, accent wall decor, mountain art prints, or mountain wallpaper. We’ll dive into these options below.

Most mountain nurseries have a dedicated accent wall to a mountainscape mural. You can paint this yourself (DIY tips listed next!), have a professional paint it, or use large wall decals or wallpaper.

This contrast could be with light and dark colors, or contrasting colors on the color wheel.

Painting your own mountain scenes is actually pretty easy! Use good quality painter’s tape to create the outlines of the mountains. Then use a damp cloth to “set” the painter’s tape into place for crisp lines. Then you’re ready to paint your mountain scenery!

I like how they kept the accent pieces the same color as the wall, so the mountains are so subtle, yet they still pop in the room.
